Herpes Simplex Type 1 is also known as the common cold sore. It is the most common type and often referred to a fever blister since it is frequently associated with a febrile illness. Will normally clear up on it's own with no treatment. The lesions appear red and swollen then vesicle forms, ulcerates and then encrust. A burning type pain can be felt when vesicle ruptures.
Herpes Simplex Type 2, frequently called genital herpes since it affects the genital area. Lesions appear 2 days to up to 2 weeks after exposure to the virus. Lesions appear as vesicles that rupture, crust over and develop ulceration at the site. Most commonly found on the cervix of women or the penis in men. Patients frequently experience fatigue, headache, myalgia, anorexia and fever.
Herpes Simplex has been linked to increased risk of miscarriage and premature birth. The herpesvirus can be fatal to newborns when transmitted during birthing process. Women with active herpes lesions will have their babies delivered by cesarean section (CDC, 2012).
Herpesvirus has no cure. Antiviral medications such as acyclovir (Zovirax) may be given to shorten the outbreak and decrease the severity of the outbreak.

Sheila,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic. This is one of those illnesses many people have, but do not like to talk about. This is site is great for information, express concerns and offer support.
I agree this is a great topic even though it is not often talked about. I would also like to add that many people may not know they have it. It is not a routine obstetric test that is performed. It is kind of scary to think about it, at least from the fetal/neonatal point of view. Thank you!
DeleteSarah,
DeleteHopefully people will talk about these issues, more education is definitely needed.
I think that if more people know the risks this disease poses to infants they will not be so shy to discuss it.
DeleteSheila,
ReplyDeleteLee (2013) stated that there are six components to consider when creating a blog: context, audience, purpose, channel, noise, and feedback. Intended messages that participants send to each other should be clear. These messages could be distorted due to participants’ beliefs, feeling, and attitudes. According to Lee (2013), “Evidence-based writing calls for a clear and credible presentation of the writer’s claims and evidence to the target audience” (p. 246). Do you think your presentation was credible and clear?
Gunelius (n. d.) stated that orange, although not often used, could evoke feelings of excitement and fun. Yellow has been shown to evoke feelings of positivity and warmth. White has been shown to evoke a sense of purity and cleanliness. Do you feel that your choice of color reflected the meaning of the content?
Culbertson (2011) stated that an effective blog has content that is compelling and causes the reader to take action in some way. Do you think that your blog will cause the reader to take action?
As a labor and delivery nurse I have worked with many patients that have herpes simplex type 1 and type 2. As long as there are no active lesions a woman may have a vaginal delivery. I have only seen one case of neonatal herpes simplex and it did not turn out well. It is not a routine test that we screen for in the antenatal or intrapartum phase of pregnancy, so we count on the patient to be forthcoming with this information. Thank you for your blog!

I was told by a Dallas County Health Practitioner that STDs are very rampant in this community, but not asked about in the PCP clinics. This is an area that should be inquired about, especially since people are living longer and more sexually active. Thank you.
DeleteGayla,
DeleteWe find in the small community where I live that these topics seem to be addressed more often by our Nurse Practicioners than the physicians. I wonder if it is has to do with their training?
Dawn
Gayla and Dawn,
DeleteI do wonder at the training of the physicians. NP's seem to be aware to ask and dig deeper for the whole person problems and not just what may be bringing them to the office at that time. Do you feel that physicians are targeting just on the one problem sometimes and are not looking for potential disease processes?
I have noticed that NP's do a more holistic approach to their assessment and not focusing on one problem but they see how that one problem can effect other areas of the body. I've found the cardiologists that I work with can be very focused on the heart and don't pay close attention to the other issues the patient can be having.
DeleteLeticia
Sheila,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic for people to be able to visit, and learn about not only this type of STD, but perhaps others as well. Your blog site presents as very professional, and not demeaning. Great start.
Sheila, great blog and a very interesting topic. I think this is a great topic as several people might not only need to learn more about this disease process but may have a personal experience and want to educate themselves further.
ReplyDeleteSheila,
ReplyDeleteI like that you presented this topic in a straightforward manner and opened the doors for further discussion and/or investigation.
Dawn
Yes, it was nonjudgmental which goes a long ways toward support.
DeleteSheila,
ReplyDeleteI like your initial topic for your blog. It was straight forward and easy to read. Herpes can be be treated successfully if it is properly diagnosed.
Thank you for sharing!
I think that's a great point. Being easy to read is important to keep someone's attention. If the site is searchable so readers can easily find the useful information, they are more likely to use it.
DeleteShelia,
ReplyDeleteYou provided good information on Herpes Simplex 1 & 2. Many people that have these conditions are embarrassed and may not seek medical attention. I hope your blog can initiate conversations on this topic. Good luck with your blog!
A blog is an excellent way to initiate conversations and dialogue on subjects that people may find embarrassing to talk about in person. Great point, Sheila.
DeleteThat is a good point I hadn't thought of that. However, I think it would be important to remember that some people may seek social internet for answers on their disease in lieu of a doctor, which can be scary!
DeleteMany people come to the internet to find information about difficult or embarrassing topics before they will speak to their physician. Having thorough, correct information for people who are too afraid to ask their doctor is important. But stressing that they seek medical intervention is the most important point any blogger can make.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteGreat comment. I think it is important for any blog representing health information should have a disclaimer and possibly some verbiage about when to seek care about a condition.
Thanks so much for the input. When I set it up, I was thinking about how my integumentary students could use the blog to ask questions. I totally forgot about the general public accessing it. New to blogging, greatly appreciate the input.

DeleteLinda,
DeleteI agree with you that the internet is the one place that is almost available to everyone in some form or fashion. It is the place where information will be sought out before discussing personal issues with medical professionals. Blogs are designed to be informative but should never take the place of true medical advice. A disclaimer should appear somewhere advising visitors that the information provided is not intended to replace medical opinion, and to seek the advice of a physician.
Sheila,
ReplyDeleteThis a a great site to provide information on the different types of herpes virus and its effects. As an obgyn nurse, this topic is particularly important for mothers who are positive for HSV2.
Kelly, I agree with you that her site provided great information. It adds to the relevance of her topic that you, as an obgyn nurse, would find it important also. From her information, babies' lives can be saved and mothers spared tremendous heartbreak from being well-informed and knowing the effects of Herpes.
DeleteHi! Good start to your blog. We all know that there are some "eye catching" pictures of this disease, you could possibly look into furthering your blog by adding some pictures, as pictures enhance blogs by peaking the readers interest (Sewll & Thede, 2013).
ReplyDeleteSewell, J., & Thede, L. (2013). Professional networking. In Informatics and nursing: Opportunities and challenges (4th ed., pp. 79-100). Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
Pictures would be a great addition to this blog. I'm sure there are a lot of copyright-free images available.
DeleteKaylan,
DeleteI agree, this site could use some pictures of the disease, something to help show the differences as well. This would help those understand better.
Sheila, your blog has the potential to inform women who carry this disease and are pregnant of what they may expect if suffering from an outbreak during labor. I think that many women don't realize the risk that this disease poses to their unborn baby. This information is important for women to know so that they can inform their OBGYN and ensure that proper care is taken when giving birth.
ReplyDeleteSheila, I find that your blog is very thorough regarding this disease. I had no idea that Herpes can result in miscarriage or premature birth. I have never blogged before now, nor have I ever read any blogs, but I am finding that they can be very informative. I would think that your topic would shed some much needed light on an issue that occasionally seems to be 'down-played.' Great topic information!
ReplyDeleteMary,
DeleteI have never blogged before this class either, but I am discovering the importance of blogging. Sheila's topic is interesting, informative, and to the point.
Sharon
Sheila-
ReplyDeleteThis blog is very educational and contains useful information about the Herpes virus. Will you be posting additional entries about Herpes or will you discuss other topics?
Offering an additional learning resource for your students is a great idea. If the articles are kept short and interesting, it could be used to help guide study preparation for tests. I can envision having a separate page for each study chapter and giving the essential information that books often take too long to provide. I imagine upkeep on such a site would be incredibly difficult and time consuming, but an honorable endeavor just the same.
ReplyDeleteI think this could potentially be a great way for instructors to get the information out to students that wasn't taught in class or is a review.
ReplyDeleteLeanne I was thinking the same that this is an excellent way to share information about this disease process for those who did not learn the information in class. Or this could be another venue of asking questions regarding further information.
DeleteGreat blog to let others know what the difference is, but where else can you go with this. Will there other posts and what about. This is otherwise helpful in letting others simply know the difference in the two types of disease. There may be many with a question about this or not know there were two different types.
ReplyDeleteSheila,
ReplyDeleteI like you simple approach at describing the different between herpes 1 & 2. As common as these diseases are, there are still a lot of misconceptions about them. This blog is concise and factual, which will hopefully lead to further inquiry and more conversation from the readers.
Shelia,
ReplyDeleteI like the way you describe the differences between Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 in easy terminology that visitors to the blog can understand. I would have liked to see pictures also depicting the two different disease processes. I think this would be valuable in understanding how Herpes can affect you.
-april
Your use of the disclaimer was wise because the collective intelligence of blogs can sometimes become common accepted content or opinion.

Sheila,
ReplyDeleteI thought your blog was very informational. Perhaps, you can mention the connection between shingles and herpes as well because it seems to be on the rise. This is sensitive information, but I believe that people may respond to get questions answered if they are uncomfortable asking people they know.
Sharon
Good information on the virus. How does this virus process affect the unborn child?
ReplyDeleteBeen a Herpes is just like been through hell; well
